Having Fun with Helicopter Skiing!

The process of skiing downhill using a helicopter is what is referred to as heli-skiing. This act avails pleasure to those skiing especially when it is considered that the terrain where the skiing is taking place is highly manipulated. The good thing about heli- skiing is that there will be a standby guide and machine which eliminates all the discomforts that may be associated with the mountains.

Heli skiing has gained a lot of popularity with countries such as USA, New Zealand, Himalayas, Nepal Chile , Canada and others having areas that are very popular for this activity. For heli skiing to be successful, the terrain in which it must take place should be diverse and run from glaciers through alpine bowls to steep chutes. In some cases the vertical height may range from 3000m to 10,000m and the runs may be between 2000feet to 700m. Helicopter ski is a bit expensive owing to the fact that it is very difficult to operate and keep the helicopters in good shape. The problem of visibility can also pose a very big challenge especially when the weather is inclement.

It is a fact that heli-skiing can take place in those regions that are remote but this may not be fun to the skiers as compared to those who are skiing in complex mountaineers terrains. In some countries, helicopter skiing has just been reduced to acts of picking and dropping skiers on the best snow available. It becomes very enjoyable if the skiing is done in an open area such as a valley. In some cases the helicopter may have an exterior basket which is used by the skiers to board the helicopter, in some cases the copter hover about picking and dropping passengers with skids just near the ground. This is a little bit riskier and that is why some pilots will choose to have the helicopter settle on the snow to allow the passengers to disembark. The skiers are unloaded in a style by setting them on to the ground and they move away from the helicopter while firmly holding on to their gears in a crouched position to allow the helicopter move away so that the snow does not in any way become a problem to the skiers.

After the process of unloading is over, the guide is mandated with the responsibility of ensuring that the skies are directed in the safest place where they can carry out their skiing activities. The guides have to assess the snow and the glacier including the avalanches before deciding which area is safe and direct the skiers to move to that direction. In some cases, the clients may be forced to ski together depending on the weather conditions for safety reasons.
